UberGirl staff and some contestants have set a challenge of reaching the highest point in the UK & Ireland in aid of our official 2010/11 charity Moni Malawi www.monimalawi.co.uk In total around 200 people will take part in the challenge to reach the Ben Nevis summit
Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1,344 metres (4,409 ft) above sea level. It is located at the western end of the Grampian Mountains in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William.
Moni Malawi the official UberGirl charity for 2010/11 is looking to raise money to build a school for kids in the district of Kaponda, Malawi. Kaponda is situated one hours drive from the capital, Lilongwe, in central Malawi and is a district which comprises 36 villages. Once complete the school will be used to teach 1,500 children, 503 of whom are orphans, who live within 2 kilometres of the school. Currently the kids are being taught under a tree for shelter, however Moni Malawi has started up their Food for thought initiative that gives every child who attends lessons a nutritious meal every day. Since the food for thought initiative started it has seen a massive increase in kids attending lessons.
In the new building, classes will be based around the traditional chalk board with Maths, English and the local African language being taught. In addition to the educational aspects of the lessons the children will also have fun playing football and netball and will all receive a well-balanced nutritional meal at lunchtime every day. Whilst some of the children are fortunate enough to have family homes to return to each evening, some others do not have the privilege. The school will be used to provide a roof for 48 of the children in the area who either have no family to return to or would have too far to travel to attend daily. This means they will have better surroundings to rest in at night and will also provide some family support.
