UberGirl is absolutely delighted to announce that Moni Malawi will be the Official UberGirl United Kingdom & Ireland 2010/11 Charity.
Over the next year we hope to raise as much money as we possibly can for their current project of building a school in Malawi that will provide education and opportunity to the generations of kids who will attend.
We will soon announce some nationwide challenges and events where we hope that all UberGirl members and contestants will take part in order to help raise money and give the kids of Malawi the gift of education, something that is provided to us by our state and something that we all expect and possibly take for granted.
MONI MALAWI
Moni Malawi was set up with the aim of raising money to assist the people of Malawi. "Moni" means "hello" in Chichewa, the principle language of Malawi. Our name therefore translates as "Hello Malawi". Malawi is a landlocked country in southern Africa. With a population of 14 million it is one of the least developed and most densely populated countries in the world. Per capita GDP is £450, compared to the UK figure of £20,000. The country suffers from high infant mortality, low life expectancy, and a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.
At Moni Malawi we hope to undertake or support a number of projects in the period ahead. The first project that we have decided to become involved with is to build a school in the district of Kaponda, Malawi. Kaponda is situated one hours drive from the capital, Lilongwe, in central Malawi and is a district which comprises 36 villages.
Once complete the school will be used to teach 1,500 children, 503 of whom are orphans, who live within 2 kilometres of the school.
In the new building, classes will be based around the traditional chalk board with Maths, English and the local African language being taught. In addition to the educational aspects of the lessons the children will also have fun playing football and netball and will all receive a well-balanced nutritional meal at lunchtime every day. Whilst some of the children are fortunate enough to have family homes to return to each evening, some others do not have the privilege. The school will be used to provide a roof for 48 of the children in the area who either have no family to return to or would have too far to travel to attend daily. This means they will have better surroundings to rest in at night and will also provide some family support.
